Choose Newton is excited to be able to offer the Facade Improvement Grant thanks to funding from the City of Newton. The grant is designed to assist business and property owners with improvements to their existing commercial buildings located in the Downtown District. The grant is a rebate of up to 50% on eligible project costs up to a maximum grant of $3,000 for each property. 

Eligibility & Requirements

Eligible projects include and are not limited to:

  • Exterior Improvements (lighting, painting, etc)
  • Awning repair, replacement, installation
  • Door and window replacement or repair to enhance their look
  • Signs (repairs, replacement, removal) - must be approved
  • Removal/Replacement of incompatible exterior finishes or materials
  • Concrete work
  • Design and Permit Fees associated with facade improvements

To be eligible to receive a grant, property owners and/or business operators must be located in the Downtown C3 District and current on property taxes. No grants will be awarded to projects that begin or are completed prior to application, and projects awarded must be completed no later than one year after awarded. A grant will only be awarded to projects that are of high quality and meet Kansas Main Street Design Guidelines, Historic Guidelines, City Codes, Zoning Codes, and any other applicable guidelines or codes for the project.

Application Process

The application and all required attachments must be submitted online. The Main Street Board will review applications and ensure that all criteria are met. Applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted and will be reviewed at regular Main Street Board meetings on odd numbered months. Once deemed eligible and a grant awarded, work must be completed within 12 months of the award date. After work is done pictures and receipts showing the total cost of the completed project must be turned into the Main Street Office and reimbursement will be dispersed to the applicant.
