Warkentin House
The Warkentin House allows you to step into Victorian era Newton in the home of Bernhard & Wilhelmina Warkentin. The Queen Ann-style home was built in 1886-1887 and is a splendid example of the Victorian period in American architecture and furnishings. The house offers a glimpse into the way the Warkentins lived. We are proud that we were able to preserve 80% of the original furnishings in the home. The home is owned by the City of Newton and operated by a group of volunteer board members.
The Warkentin House & Museum not only tells the history of architecture and design but also of the Warkentin family and the impact they had on the Newton community. The Warkentins helped to make Kansas into the "wheat state". They encouraged local farmers to grow Turkey Red Wheat that they had brought over from Russia, an area that is now in Ukraine. They established the flour mill, now known as The Old Mill in Newton. Bernhard Warkentin was also one of three founders of Bethel College in North Newton. The Warkentins were instrumental donors to start the Bethel Deaconess Hospital advancing healthcare options in Newton and the area.
Make sure to come learn more of the rich history of the Warkentins and their home.
